TheyFolk is run by a small team. In order to best support women, non-binary, trans, and intersex artists, we ask that you carefully read the below information to see if applying to perform at a TheyFolk is right for you.

TheyFolk are proud to offer performance opportunities for creatives who are women, non-binary, trans or intersex musicians, storytellers, or folk artists, including artists whose musical stylings may not fit within conventional "Folk" genres.

FutureFolk are a Team of storytellers and Folk-influenced musicians, and may be biased to genres which are similar to those we are familiar with ... until we are exposed to more content of other styles. Please be patient with us while we continue to grow and learn.

Genre:

Our platform exists to support artists who are creating in the folk stream of music and performing arts, with a special emphasis on storytelling. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Traditional Folk

  • Contemporary Folk

  • Singer-Songwriters

  • Canadiana / Americana

  • Roots

  • Bluegrass

  • Acoustic Music

  • Folk Fusion (Folk-Rock, Folk-Pop, Folk-Jazz)

Our genre constrictions have been suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Career Stage:

We are best suited to artists whose music is new or emerging. You do not need to be a Canadian citizen or resident to be considered for a TheyFolk performance, and we are eager to witness music and art from around the world.

For the purpose of your event location, please state the city and country in which you would like to perform. For all events taking place outside of Edmonton, Canada, we recommend reaching out with at least 2 months notice.

Gender:

TheyFolk are focussed on providing a platform and support for artists who may be subject to gender-based discrimination, or a lack of support in the Folk music or performing arts scenes. This includes but is not limited to artists who identify as women, non-binary, trans or intersex.

For duos or groups, we simply ask that your ensemble either:

  • be lead, fronted, or have the majority of the songwriting done by a woman, non-binary, trans, or intersex person.

  • consist of at least 50% women, non-binary, trans, or intersex individuals.

Review Submission

Thanks for submitting!

Now that you have submitted your creations to the TheyFolk team, here's what you can expect.

We will endeavour to review every song sent to us (limit one review per artist per month). Our favorite songs will be added to one or more of our new FemFolk playlists, which our team will stream constantly over the coming months.

We ask you to consider donating to the FemFolk team, which allows us to keep on reviewing, and keep on serving you. If you are unable to donate, please share our donation page, so we can continue to support artists such as yourselves.
